Kilimanjaro: compare six routes by days, gates and altitude

Use TANAPA’s current Kilimanjaro information to choose a route length, check gate logistics and plan for altitude without relying on a generic summit promise.

Kilimanjaro is a high-altitude national park trek with six routes, not one standard walk. TANAPA’s visitor page says reaching Kibo takes 5–8 days depending on route and that more days increase the possibility of reaching the summit. That makes route length the first planning decision: compare the number of nights, the altitude profile and the operator’s acclimatisation plan before comparing scenery or price.

Ask what “six routes” means for your booking

TANAPA’s visitor page confirms the six trails but does not turn them into a universal ranking. Ask the operator to name the route and gate, show each sleeping altitude, identify the highest camp before summit night and explain what happens if a trekker needs to descend. A page that only says “Kilimanjaro climb” leaves the most important logistics unanswered.

The mountain reaches 5,895 metres at Kibo. A fit lowland hiker can still be affected by altitude, cold, wind or exhaustion. Build a conservative pace, listen to the guide and treat symptoms that worsen as a reason to stop and seek the operator’s medical plan. A summit attempt is optional; returning safely is the fixed endpoint.

Plan around the gate, not an airport timetable

TANAPA currently lists the park as open year-round and gates closing at 18:00. Confirm the gate-opening arrangement, required permits, guide or porter rules and the meeting point with your licensed operator. Kilimanjaro International Airport is about 40 km from the park according to TANAPA, but the transfer time to a particular gate depends on the route and traffic. Do not schedule a same-day summit briefing around a tight flight arrival.

Fees deserve a separate check. TANAPA’s tariff page identifies its comprehensive table as financial year 2023/24. Use the live official reservation channel or your operator for the amount applicable to your travel date, traveller category and park services rather than copying a historic total into an itinerary.

Pack for several climates: sun protection and water on lower sections, warm insulating layers for high camps and a headlamp for an early summit departure. Neutral clothing, binoculars and guide instructions are among TANAPA’s visitor tips. The exact kit should follow the route, season and operator’s safety briefing.

This guide was checked against the official TANAPA pages on 5 September 2026. Gate procedures, permits, fees and route operations can change; confirm them with TANAPA or the licensed operator before departure.
