Milford Track 2026: book the huts, then leave room for rain

A practical Milford Track plan for the one-way four-day route, 2026/27 hut bookings, Lake Te Anau transport, wet weather and sandflies.

The Milford Track is a one-way Great Walk of three nights and four days in the official season. DOC lists the 2026–27 season as 1 November 2026 to 30 April 2027, with the final departure earlier in the season, and requires a booking for each of the three huts. Walkers without a valid hut booking can be turned away when the huts are full (DOC Milford Track; DOC Great Walks).

Treat transport as part of the route

The approach starts with transport from Te Anau to Te Anau Downs and a boat to Glade Wharf. DOC lists the lake crossing at about 1 hour 15 minutes. The walk ends at Sandfly Point, followed by a boat of about 20 minutes to Milford Sound/Piopiotahi. Put every departure in the same offline plan as the hut booking; a late bus or boat cannot be solved by walking faster later (DOC Milford Track). Keep an overnight buffer before a flight or long road transfer after the final boat.

Pack for wet stages

DOC’s track information and walking guide are the authority for the current route, weather warnings and closures. Pack sleeping clothes and electronics in dry bags, with spare socks and rain protection that remains usable after hours outside. Rain can turn bridges, forest sections and exposed McKinnon Pass weather into different decisions. Follow wardens and signs when a section is damaged or water is high; do not create a side crossing beside a marked route.

The huts are booked stopping points, not a promise of dry weather or a supplied kitchen inventory. Check the current DOC accommodation guidance for what to carry, keep food sealed, and take packaging out when the facility cannot receive it. Sandflies are a known Fiordland nuisance; carry repellent that works for you and keep it accessible before the boat arrives.
