Table Mountain via Platteklip Gorge: plan the return first

If you plan to hike up Platteklip Gorge and ride the cableway down, first decide whether you can walk down as well. SANParks describes Platteklip as the most direct route to the top: about 3 km uphill, roughly 1–3 hours depending on fitness, and moderate to tough. The same guidance warns that fast weather changes can stop the cableway and leave hikers at the upper station, so the descent is part of the route even when a ticket is in your pocket.

Treat the cableway as optional transport#

The Cableway’s operating-hours page says its schedule applies weather permitting. Its official home page publishes the live operating message and tells visitors to check real-time weather because bad weather may close the service. A ticket or a clear morning does not guarantee the car will still run when you reach the upper station.

On the date checked for this guide, 5 September 2026, the Cableway’s spring timetable covers 1 September–31 October. Use those hours as a planning reference, not as a promise: maintenance, wind, cloud and other operational changes can alter the service. Check the official status immediately before setting out, and again before committing to the upper route. Leave enough daylight and energy for the marked descent if the status changes.

Pack for the gorge, not the city below#

Platteklip is built with stone steps and erosion-control structures, but SANParks still calls it steep and demanding. Take enough water, a hat, sunscreen and warm windproof clothing; these are the park’s own recommendations. Keep a charged phone and an offline route reference, but do not treat a signal or a phone battery as a rescue plan.

Start early enough to finish the walk in daylight and keep the group together. If heat, wind, cloud, an injury or fatigue changes the margin, turn around on the known route. Do not add a longer summit walk simply because the cableway is open; SANParks warns that low cloud or mist on the upper mountain can disorient walkers.

Keep the route and the park intact#

SANParks asks visitors not to pick or trample plants, remove rocks or seeds, or feed and touch animals. Stay on the marked path and carry packaging back down. The same guidance says never to light fires outside designated braai areas and not to discard cigarette ends. A route that is open for walking still needs those conservation decisions at every stop.

Do not improvise a shortcut across fynbos to avoid a queue or reach a photograph. If a sign, step or barrier looks damaged, note the exact location from a safe place and report it to SANParks. Do not cross a closure to inspect the problem.
