Torres del Paine W Trek: book the mountain nights before the transport

Plan the Torres del Paine W as a chain, not as one ticket. The park’s reservation guidance says to buy the park entry at least 24 hours before arrival and to reserve every mountain night at an equipped refugio or campsite; without those accommodation reservations, visitors cannot enter the mountain area. It names Las Torres Patagonia and Vértice Patagonia as the main reservation systems. A bed, pass or boat booked on its own is not a complete itinerary.

Build the W in walking order#

The park’s visitor guidance describes the W as a three-to-five-day route visiting Grey Glacier, Valle del Francés and Base Torres. Write the walking direction, every night, the trailhead and the exit transfer in one table before paying for anything. The accommodation operators are separate systems, so check that the dates and names match across confirmations. Keep the original confirmations offline because the park says its interior trails do not have phone or internet service.

The park entry pass covers access to the protected area; it does not replace a mountain accommodation reservation or a transport booking. The park also says that the W requires a reservation, while a day visit to Base Torres is handled separately. If a night is unavailable, do not fill the gap with an unofficial pitch or assume the next sector can be reached after dark. Choose a shorter day visit or move the whole chain to dates that fit.

Read the rule that applies to your dates#

At the source check on 5 September 2026, CONAF’s visitor notice said that the mandatory guide requirement for Base Torres and the W was extended to 15 September because of weather and trail conditions. CONAF’s park page also recommends an authorised guide for the W and requires registration at enabled control points. After 15 September, reopen the same official channels: the end of a date in a notice is not a guarantee that conditions have normalised.

The June 2026 winter regulation states that the W is a multi-day activity requiring a specialised accredited guide during the winter operating period. It records a temporary W closure for June and July 2026 and lists route, guide, registration, equipment and weather procedures for the remaining winter months. Use that document for the dates it covers, then check for a newer notice before relying on any seasonal detail.

Leave margin for wind, snow and transport#

The park’s visitor recommendations say Patagonia’s weather changes rapidly, advise layers for rain, wind and snow, and warn that trail closing times are intended to prevent visitors being caught by darkness. The winter regulation adds that prolonged adverse weather can lead CONAF to recommend delaying a group that has not entered the mountain and to hold groups already inside rather than start a new section, especially in whiteout conditions.

Treat a catamaran or bus connection as a timed dependency. Leave food and daylight for a delay, confirm the next sailing with the operator and ask the ranger or guide about the current route before leaving a camp. If a service is cancelled or a trail is closed, stay in the sector where you have a confirmed place to sleep or take an authorised day option. Do not walk an unmarked lakeshore or service road to rescue a fixed dinner time.

Carry out waste and use only authorised cooking areas#

The park’s rules on unauthorised activities prohibit fires and other unauthorised heat sources inside the park and require visitors to carry out all rubbish. Cooking is restricted to expressly permitted stoves that do not use plant material as fuel, and only in the specially enabled area of a campsite. Pack food in a closed bag, keep scraps away from wildlife and bring every wrapper back to the operator’s collection point or out of the park.

Stay on authorised trails. The park warns that leaving hiking routes is dangerous and says that registration at ranger stations is mandatory; the visitor guidance also lists no phone or internet signal on the interior trails. A dated observation about a sign, bridge or waste facility is useful when sent to the park or operator with the exact sector and date. It is not evidence that the whole route is open.
