Trolltunga: P1, P2 or P3 changes the hike by half a day

Trolltunga’s viewpoint has three very different starting plans. The official hike page lists P3 at about 20 km return, 7–10 hours and 320 m of ascent; from P2 it is about 27 km return, 8–12 hours and 800 m; from P1 the approach can be about 38 km and around 15 hours (official hike information). Choose the starting point from the group’s daylight, fitness and weather margin, not from a photograph’s apparent distance.

Book the road and parking chain#

The official transport page explains the P1, P2 and P3 parking and shuttle arrangements. The road notice for 2026 says the road is controlled from 06:00 to 21:00 and closed overnight for rockslide protection; P3 availability is seasonal. Check the live site for the operating dates, shuttle departure and return plan before leaving Odda or Tyssedal (parking and transport; official 2026 information).

The official guidance intends self-guided hiking for experienced hikers from 1 June to 30 September and recommends a guide outside that period. Carry water, food, layers and a headlamp if the plan could run late. Wind, rain, cold and low visibility can make the return more serious than the outbound estimate. Stay on the marked route and follow a guide or local warning when conditions change.

Treat the photograph as a stop inside a long day. Leave time for the queue at the rock, the return descent and the final shuttle or road control. Do not depend on a last departure after a full day in exposed terrain, and keep the group together at the viewpoint.
