Lençóis Maranhenses: match the lagoon day to an authorized route

Lençóis Maranhenses is a protected dune and lagoon landscape where the useful choice is between a short guided outing and a remote trek. ICMBio’s visitor guidance says the national park is open year-round, charges no park visitation fee and requires transport, drivers and visitor conductors to be properly authorized. A local agency’s service price is separate from the park’s admission.

Choose the gateway and vehicle before the lagoon#

Barreirinhas and Santo Amaro do Maranhão are the principal gateway towns; ICMBio lists Humberto de Campos and Primeira Cruz as access points too. Ask the operator which town, route and lagoon or dune area the day uses, where the vehicle meets you and how the return works. The official visitor guidance does not permit private vehicles for visitor transport or tours, and it prohibits unauthorized vehicles such as private cars, motorcycles, buggies, quadricycles and UTVs.

Use an operator whose vehicle and conductor carry valid ICMBio authorization. Follow the conductor’s route and signs rather than driving across open dunes. ICMBio also prohibits motor-vehicle traffic over the free dune field, fires, alcohol and illicit drugs, and domestic animals inside the park. These rules protect a remote landscape and set the boundaries for what a “4x4 lagoon tour” may do.

Pack differently for a day and for Travessia#

ICMBio recommends water, insect repellent and sunscreen for every visit. Travessia dos Lençóis needs a separate water plan: the visitor page recommends at least 3 litres per person per day because support points are limited to Baixa Grande and Queimada dos Britos in the park’s primitive zone. Treat that as a minimum planning instruction from the park, then ask the authorized conductor about food, overnight arrangements, communications and emergency support.

A day tour still crosses hot, exposed sand. Carry water in a reusable bottle, protect electronics from fine sand and keep a layer for wind or rain. Lagoon conditions, access routes and operator schedules are local and can change; do not convert a photograph from one town or date into a promise about every lagoon.

The park’s no-fee status does not mean a self-guided crossing is suitable. The dune field is remote, signage is not a substitute for navigation and the rules place visitor transport and guiding with authorized providers. If a company cannot show current authorization or explain the route, choose another provider.
