Yr Wyddfa: choose the path before the summit crowd chooses your day

Yr Wyddfa has several mountain routes with different terrain, starting points and transport. Eryri lists Llanberis, Pyg, Miners’, Snowdon Ranger, Rhyd Ddu and Watkin among the paths. Its route guide describes the west-side Rhyd Ddu and Snowdon Ranger approaches as challenging; choose the path from current weather and the group’s ability before choosing a bus or car park (Eryri route guide).

Put parking, buses and the railway on one map#

Watkin parking is limited and should not be used as overflow when a lot is full. Check current parking and Sherpa’r Wyddfa bus information, arrive with a return departure written down and never stop on a bend or block a bus. Conditions on Llanberis do not describe Pyg or Watkin, so check each route separately.

The Snowdon Mountain Railway is a separate transport operation. Walkers must stay clear of the railway line and must never walk on or beneath it. Follow the park’s signs at crossings and do not use the track bed as a shortcut or waiting area (Eryri railway safety guidance).

Mountain weather can change while the valley remains bright. Carry water, food and a warm waterproof layer, and set a turnaround before the summit ridge. If the group is slow or low cloud removes the view, a safe lower finish is still a completed mountain day. Recheck path, parking, bus and railway notices before departure.
