Cadillac Mountain sunrise in 2026: plan the road reservation first

For a 2026 Cadillac Mountain sunrise, secure two separate permissions: an Acadia entrance pass and a Cadillac Summit Road vehicle reservation. The National Park Service reservation page says the road reservation is required from 20 May through 25 October 2026, costs $6, and is sold online rather than at the park. It is attached to a vehicle, not to each passenger.

The reservation gives timed access to the road. It does not promise a clear horizon, a parking space, an empty overlook or an open road after a closure. Treat sunrise as a weather-dependent plan with a valid access window.

Choose the correct window#

NPS releases 30% of Sunrise and Daytime inventory 90 days ahead at 10:00 Eastern Time and 70% two days ahead at the same time. A Sunrise reservation has a 90-minute entry window; a Daytime reservation has a 30-minute window. Sunrise reservations are limited to one per vehicle every seven days, while Daytime reservations are limited to one per vehicle per day.

Check the table on the official page for the month you will visit. The published 2026 Sunrise windows change through the season, so an arrival time copied from a summer itinerary may be wrong in September or October. Save the QR confirmation offline: NPS warns that connectivity is unreliable in the park.

The reservation does not assign a parking space and does not allow re-entry. Vehicles longer than 21 feet, including racks and hitch attachments, plus recreational vehicles and trailers, are prohibited on Cadillac Summit Road. Do not arrive with a vehicle that the reservation cannot admit.

Keep weather and access separate#

Cadillac Summit Road is a narrow, two-lane, three-mile road to the 1,530-foot summit. NPS advises caution and yielding to pedestrians. The park’s general planning page links to current alerts, advisories and closures; check those notices again before driving from Bar Harbor. A reservation email is not a reopening notice.

At the summit, use designated parking and paved walks. If fog, wind or a closure removes the sunrise view, keep the reservation decision separate from the morning’s value: choose another open Acadia destination. If you want a daytime visit instead, change the reservation before its booked window when NPS allows it, or book a new daytime reservation; do not assume a used Sunrise reservation can be reused. Never pass a gate or stop on the road for a photograph.

Carry the confirmation, entrance pass, warm layers and water. Keep food and small packaging secured, follow marked routes and leave the viewpoints clear for other visitors.
