North of Varna the coast changes character. At Balchik, a Romanian queen's summer residence steps down a green hillside to the sea inside a 19-hectare botanic garden. Further on, the bare headland of Kaliakra pushes 2 km into the Black Sea on cliffs up to 70 metres high, with the walls of a medieval capital on top. Inland, Dobrich keeps the crafts and icons of the Dobrudzha plain.
What to see
Balchik Palace
In 1913, after the Balkan Wars, Bulgaria ceded Southern Dobrudzha to Romania. Queen Marie of Romania first came to Balchik in 1921 with her son Prince Nicholas, was taken by the bay, and chose it as the place for a retreat at the southern edge of her new territories (The Palace). Building began in 1924 and finished in 1936; she died two years later. Her own house was called Tenha Yuvah, the Quiet Nest (The Palace). Rather than a single grand palace, she built modest stone villas with Turkish-tiled roofs scattered through a park, keeping the riverside poplars and old watermills she found there (history). The region returned to Bulgaria under the Treaty of Craiova, signed on 7 September 1940, and the complex is now a state cultural institute (history).
What makes the place memorable is that mix: small villas, terraces, water channels and flower beds tumbling towards the shore, with the Balchik cliffs behind. It suits anyone who likes gardens and architecture, and photographers. If you only want a quick sea view, the town's waterfront will do.
University Botanic Garden
The garden shares the hillside with the palace but belongs to Sofia University. Founded in 1955 by the botanist Daki Yordanov, it covers 19.4 hectares and holds more than 4,900 species. It grew out of Queen Marie's landscape park, which is itself protected as a monument of garden art (University Botanic Gardens).
The main draw is the large outdoor collection of cacti and succulents. Look out too for the old ginkgo, the metasequoia and the Japanese raisin tree. A 0.7-hectare accessible garden has paths built to accessibility standards, seasonal flowers, alpine plantings, water features and cacti in stone beds, plus a section where blind and partially sighted visitors can touch plants labelled in Braille (garden information). Beyond that section, the complex is laid out on terraces down the hillside.
Budget for two tickets. Entry to the complex needs a ticket for the palace and a separate one for the garden, €10 each for adults (garden; palace). There are three ways in: the official north entrance, the coastal road between Balchik and Albena, and the seafront (palace visits). Allow at least half a day for both.
Balchik town museums
Balchik grew from a Thracian settlement that Greek colonists called Krounoi and later renamed Dionysopolis after a statue of Dionysus was found in the sea (Balchik). Three small museums in the centre tell that story and the town's later life. They share opening hours and are run by the Historical Museum Balchik.
The Historical Museum, at 2 Dimitar Zhelev Street in a building put up in 1907 for the town administration, leads from prehistoric tools to Hellenistic and Roman Dionysopolis and the Middle Ages (museum). Its third hall is the reason to go. In 2007 the museum director stopped building work that was about to destroy the remains of a temple of Cybele, the Phrygian Mother of the Gods, in use from the 3rd century BC to the 4th century AD. The excavation produced more than 200 coins, 27 marble inscriptions and over 20 marble sculptures of Cybele, Aphrodite, Poseidon, Dionysus and Pan, now displayed here (Temple of Cybele).
The Ethnographic House, on the same street, is a house from 1895 that became a museum in 1980 and holds more than 1,500 objects. The ground floor covers the region's crafts and livelihoods, from leatherwork, cooperage and copper and iron work to fishing and farming; upstairs are folk textiles, costumes and jewellery. Since 2016 the courtyard has held the Way of Wine, following the vine from planting to harvest and winemaking (Ethnographic House).
The Art Gallery occupies a late 19th-century school building renovated in 2015. The permanent collection of Bulgarian art is upstairs, with Bencho Obreshkov's and Nikola Daskalov's views of old Balchik and Boris Karadzhov's sculpture Pietà; the ground floor hosts visiting exhibitions around a replica statue of Dionysus. The gallery also owns 413 works by the cartoonist Todor Tsonev and all 108 issues of the satirical paper Satira from 1990-1999 (Art Gallery).
If you have time for only one, choose the Historical Museum for the Cybele finds.
Cape Kaliakra
Kaliakra lies 12 km south-east of Kavarna: a narrow rocky peninsula about 2 km long, with cliffs 60-70 metres high. The Thracian Tirizis tribe lived here from the 4th century BC. The main wall, which closed the town off from the land side, still stands about 2 metres high over a length of 440 metres. Excavations have uncovered a large 4th-century bath, an almost intact vaulted tomb of the same period and several medieval churches. The cape became a nature reserve in 1941 and the fortress a monument of national importance in 1967 (Ministry of Tourism).
The place peaked in the second half of the 14th century, when it was the capital of the Dobrudzha despotate under the Bulgarian rulers Balik and Dobrotitsa. Offshore, on 31 July 1791, Admiral Fyodor Ushakov's Russian fleet defeated an Ottoman fleet, and a monument to him was put up in 2006. Kaliakra's best-known legend tells of forty Bulgarian girls who tied their hair together and leapt into the sea rather than be captured; an obelisk recalls them. The reserve lies on a major bird migration route, and dolphins and cormorants can be seen from the cliffs (Kaliakra).
Come for both halves: the walk out along the headland past the walls, and the views back along the cliffs. The small site museum, run by the Historical Museum Kavarna, opens only from 15 May to 15 October (Kavarna museum). Stay behind the barriers near the edges and leave plants and ruins undisturbed.
Dobrich
Dobrich is about 35 km inland from Balchik (Balchik) and makes a good half-day for anyone interested in crafts or religious art. All three sites below belong to the Regional History Museum and are open Monday to Saturday in summer and on weekdays in winter.
Old Dobrich is an open-air complex that has kept the town's crafts alive for more than 40 years. More than 20 workshops make pottery, ironwork, leather goods, embroidery, weaving and woodcarving in the style of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, around a restored 18th-century clock tower. There are also places to eat, a permanent archaeology exhibition and a reconstructed 19th-century classroom (Old Dobrich). This is the one to choose with children.
The Revival Hall in the Art Gallery building at 14 Bulgaria Street shows 17th-19th-century icons from across Dobrudzha by painters of the Tryavna school, including Zahariy Tsanyuv, Nedko Todorovich and Koycho Dosyuv. The museum describes its icons of Saints Cyril and Methodius as the richest such collection in the country (Revival Hall). Several images of the same two saints side by side make it easy to compare how different painters handled them.
The museum in St George City Park, in a building that once hosted balls and later a casino, presents the Nature of Dobrudzha in panoramic dioramas of the region's animals and plants (park museum).
Which sights to prioritise
- One stop only: Balchik Palace and the botanic garden.
- Landscape and history together: Kaliakra, ideally in the late afternoon light.
- Archaeology: the Cybele finds in Balchik's Historical Museum.
- Crafts and families: Old Dobrich.
- Icons and art: Dobrich's Revival Hall, then the Balchik Art Gallery.
Balchik and Kaliakra are both on the coast and pair naturally in one day. Dobrich sits inland and works best on a separate morning or on the way to or from Varna.
Suggested plans
One day from Varna. Arrive at Balchik Palace soon after opening and spend the morning in the palace and garden. Have lunch in Balchik, then drive on to Kaliakra for the afternoon. On a summer weekday, swap the last hour at the palace for the Historical Museum.
Two days. Day one as above. On day two, see the Balchik town museums in the morning, then Old Dobrich and the Revival Hall in Dobrich, returning to Varna in the evening.
Best time to go
May to September is the full season: the palace and garden open from 08:00 to 20:00 from May to August, the Kaliakra museum is open daily, and the Balchik and Dobrich museums open on Saturdays. From October the palace and garden close at 17:00 or 18:00, the Kaliakra museum shuts after 15 October, and the town museums in both Balchik and Dobrich close at weekends. In winter, therefore, plan the museums for weekdays. Spring and early summer are good for the garden's flowers, and autumn light suits Kaliakra's cliffs.
How to get there
A car makes this region much easier, since the sights are spread along the coast and inland. Balchik is about 42 km north-east of Varna (Balchik), which makes the city a practical base; see our Varna guide. For Kaliakra, take the asphalt road from the village of Balgarevo to the car park on the cape; Balgarevo is about 6 km away and has the nearest hotels (Ministry of Tourism).
