Giant’s Causeway: separate free coastal access from the Visitor Experience

The stones of Giant’s Causeway and the paid Visitor Experience answer different visitor needs. The National Trust page says you can walk to the stones for free. The Visitor Experience adds reserved on-site parking, the exhibition, facilities, audio guides and guided walks. Buying a ticket is therefore about managed services and parking, not a fee for the coastline itself.

Check the date-specific opening panel before travel. On the page checked today, 5 September 2026, the coastline is listed from dawn to dusk, the Causeway Coast Way Car Park from 05:00 to 20:00 and the Visitor Centre from 09:00 to 17:00. Those are examples of the page’s date selector, not permanent hours.

Choose the access product#

Pre-book the Visitor Experience if you need its car park or want the exhibition, a guided tour or an audio guide. The National Trust says pre-booking helps spread arrivals and avoid disappointment. Coaches and minibuses must be arranged through the booking office rather than the standard online flow.

If you only want the free coastal walk, use a legal alternative car park and check its terms. The National Trust describes the Causeway Coast Way Car Park at Innisfree Farm as a paid option for walkers accessing the coastal paths. Do not leave a vehicle on a verge or assume that the Visitor Experience car park is available without a ticket.

Match a trail to the group#

The Trust lists four trails across the World Heritage Site. The Blue Trail is the direct route to the stones; the Green Trail is an accessible clifftop route; the Red and Yellow trails add longer clifftop walking. Compare distance, weather, footwear and daylight before choosing. The free route does not remove the need to manage waves, wet basalt and cliff edges.

Stay on established paths, keep children close and follow closures. Do not remove stones or wedge coins into the columns: the Trust has warned that coins damage the World Heritage Site. Carry food packaging back to the next suitable bin and keep dogs on leads where the site rules require it.
