Pirin day hikes from Bansko: Vihren, lakes and Baykusheva Mura

Bansko sits at the foot of northern Pirin, and the road from town up the Banderitsa valley leads straight into the best of the range: a pine more than 1,300 years old, a string of glacial lakes, and Vihren, at 2,915 m the highest peak in Pirin (Pirin National Park). Vihren is Bulgaria's second-highest summit and the third in the Balkans, and unlike granite Musala it is built of marble, with karst ground around the summit where water does not collect (Wikipedia). Everything below starts from two huts at the head of the valley, so you can choose anything from a ten-minute stroll to a full summit day.

What to see#

Baykusheva Mura#

Ten minutes' walk from Banderitsa hut stands Baykusheva Mura, a Bosnian pine (Pinus heldreichii) more than 1,300 years old, about 22 m tall and around 8 m round the trunk (Pirin National Park). It is the park's emblem and the easiest worthwhile stop in the valley, even for visitors who do not plan to hike.

Okoto and Ribno Banderishko lakes#

Above Vihren hut the valley opens into a glacial cirque full of lakes. Okoto is 15 minutes from the hut, Ribno Banderishko about 50 (hut and route times). Note that this Okoto is a Pirin lake, not the Eye among the Seven Rila Lakes. The park describes the Banderitsa and Demyanitsa valleys as a landscape of clear water, waterfalls and lakes (Vihren section), and a slow walk up to the higher lakes is a satisfying half day in its own right.

Vihren summit#

The standard route climbs from Vihren hut over the Kabata saddle on the south side; the park lists 2 hours 30 minutes up from either Vihren hut or Banderitsa hut (hut and route times), while route descriptions for walkers at a normal pace put it at three to four hours in summer (Wikipedia). Plan for the slower figure and add the descent. The alpine slopes hold edelweiss and the endemic Pirin poppy.

The Kazana cirques and Koncheto#

Vihren's north face falls into two cirques, Golemiya and Malkiya Kazan. In the larger one lies Snezhnika, a small glacieret described as Europe's southernmost glacial mass (Wikipedia). The Kazana shelter, a basic hut with bunks for four or five people, sits at 2,445 m on the rock step between the two cirques and is meant for emergencies only; Banderitsa hut is 1 hour 30 minutes below it. Koncheto, a narrow ridge in the Vihren group, takes about 3 hours 30 minutes from Vihren hut via the Kazana (hut and route times). It is exposed and only for confident scramblers with a good forecast.

Tevno Lake#

Tevno Lake shelter, at 2,512 m in the heart of the range, is a different kind of objective: 7 hours on foot from Bansko or 6 hours 30 minutes from Vihren hut. The shelter has 30 places, is open all year and is staffed only in summer (hut and route times). Treat it as an overnight trip, not something to add to a day walk.

Suggested plans#

Easy half day: drive up to Banderitsa hut, walk to Baykusheva Mura, then on to Vihren hut by the marked path and up to Okoto lake. Around two hours of walking in total.

Lakes day: from Vihren hut climb past Okoto to Ribno Banderishko and the higher lakes beyond, and come back the same way.

Vihren summit: start early from Vihren hut, climb via Kabata to the top, and come down the same route. A full mountain day.

Two days: Vihren hut to Tevno Lake shelter, sleep there in summer, and return via Demyanitsa hut to Bansko on foot.

Getting up from Bansko#

The huts are 14 km from Bansko by an asphalt road, or about 4 hours on foot by a marked path (hut information). Banderitsa hut has a campsite with room for about 60 tents and its own parking; Vihren hut also has a car park.

The Bansko gondola to Banderishka Polyana is a separate access point lower down. Banderitsa hut is listed at one hour on foot from the lower lift station at Shiligarnika (hut information). The municipality's 2026 schedule runs the gondola every day from 08:00 to 16:30 between 27 June and 6 September, with the last ride up at 16:00. From 7 September to 30 November it runs only on weekdays, with one ride up at 08:00 and one down at 16:30 (2026 gondola schedule), which leaves no margin if you miss the afternoon descent.

Season and park rules#

The main hiking season is summer and early autumn; in winter the upper valleys are avalanche terrain. Pirin National Park asks walkers to stay on marked routes, light fires only at signed places and carry all rubbish down, since there are no bins in the mountains. Tell someone your route and return time, and turn back in thunderstorms or poor visibility. For emergencies, call 112 or the Mountain Rescue Service on 1470 (park safety rules).
