Sunrise and sunset over Sofia: Vitosha viewpoints and the way back

Sofia lies on a plain directly north of Vitosha, so the views over the city are on the mountain's northern edge. The closest is Balkonacheto, a bare ridge above the top of Boyana, roughly half an hour's walk from a bus 63 stop. Above it are the ridge path to Kopitoto, the rocky top with the TV tower, and Kamen Del, whose summit takes in the whole city. For a high-mountain sunrise there is Cherni Vrah, with a night at Aleko hut first. Because the city lies to the north, the sunrise comes up to the right of the city view, closest to it in early summer. The sunset is off to the left: in the west-north-west in summer and round to the south-west in winter. At these spots an evening visit is mostly about the city in low light and its lights coming on, rather than the sun going down over it.

Getting back is the hard part. On the Sofia Traffic timetable checked on 27 October 2026, the last buses left the higher part of the mountain at around 18:00, and the park says the last buses run earlier from November to March. For most of the year, a sunset up there means walking down to Boyana or Knyazhevo after dark, or arranging a car or taxi.

Where the sun rises and sets over Sofia#

Sofia's sunrise and sunset swing through a wide arc over the year. The figures below are local time, with the direction in degrees from north (Sunrisesunsettime.org):

This sets up a useful pattern. From the Kopitoto TV tower, the city centre lies at about 44°, north-east, and from Kamen Del at about 22°. Around the June solstice the sun comes up at 56°, a little to the right of the centre as seen from Kopitoto, and further to the right from Kamen Del. At the equinoxes it rises well to the right, over the eastern plain, and in December far round to the south-east. The geometry also works in reverse: seen from the city centre, Kopitoto lies at about 224° and Kamen Del at about 202°. From the city, the December sunset at 238° therefore drops a little to the right of Kopitoto, while summer sunsets go down far to the right, in the west-north-west. These bearings are worked out from the summit coordinates on Bulgarian Wikipedia (Kopitoto, Kamen Del) and the city-centre point used for the sun table. The point where the sun actually appears or disappears shifts with the height of the horizon.

The viewpoints at a glance#

Balkonacheto above Byalata Voda#

This is the easiest place to watch the city through dusk and still be home for dinner. Take bus 63 to ul. Byalata cheshma, the stop at the top of Boyana where the early and late runs turn, and walk up the road towards Golden Bridges. After crossing the bridge over the Rakovets stream, you reach the junction with the old Belovodski road in about 15 minutes. Turn left along it and the stone fountain at Byalata Voda is 5 minutes further on. Just past the small wooden footbridge, stone steps climb steeply to the left. After about ten metres, fork right onto the bare crest called Yavorov Rid. The small flat spot here, known as Balkonacheto ("the little balcony"), looks out over Knyazhevo, Boyana, the Lyulin district and most of the capital. The park notes that the path is still clear, although few walkers use it (park routes, I.1 and I.2). By day, the 63 runs that continue to Golden Bridges also call at the Byalata Voda request stop, a few hundred metres from the fountain (Sofia Traffic).

The view runs north and north-east over the city, so from May to August the sunrise comes up close to the line of the city centre. The sunset is off to the left, in the west, and the park does not describe a western view from this spot. For the sun going down, the Planinets hut road further up is the better place (see the next section). After dark, go back down the same way to ul. Byalata cheshma.

The Rakovets ridge and Kopitoto#

The park calls the path from Knyazhevo the shortest way to Kopitoto: about 1 hr 30 min and 648 m of climbing from the tram 5 terminus. From the bridge over the Rakovets it zigzags steeply up the ridge on the left side of the valley, and the park describes it as well marked. Several small open spots on the crest look over Knyazhevo, Gorna Banya, most of the Sofia plain and almost every district of the city, as far as the slopes of Stara Planina. The higher you go, the wider the view. The path comes out on the asphalt road to Kopitoto, and the top is about 10 minutes further along it. Kopitoto, at 1,348 m, can be seen from every part of the Sofia plain (park routes, I.7). The TV tower was built there in 1985, and the Kopitoto hotel stands beside it (Bulgarian Wikipedia).

Kopitoto is the best sunrise viewpoint over the city itself, because from late spring to late summer the sun comes up close to the line of the centre. For sunset, the side road to Planinets hut is a better bet. It branches off the Kopitoto road and reaches the hut in about 15 minutes, with views south to Vladayski Cherni Vrah and Ostritsa, west over the Pernik plain and north across the whole of the Lyulin mountain (park routes, I.2).

There is a flatter way in from above. From Golden Bridges, follow the road north and then a broad path for about 50 minutes, with a slight descent, to Kopitoto (park routes, XV.8). It suits an afternoon visit, but not a return after sunset: on the timetable checked, the last 63 left Golden Bridges at 18:10 on weekdays (see the table below). The cable car from Knyazhevo has been out of use since 1990, and the park warns that walking up or down its old cutting is extremely difficult and dangerous (park routes, I.7). Kamen Del#

Kamen Del (1,862 m) is the peak you can see clearly from Sofia's main streets (Bulguides). The panorama from its summit covers all of Sofia, from Pancharevo lake in the east to Gorna Banya and Malo Buchino in the west. The easiest approach is up the southern slope from near Ushite shelter. Some slopes reach 40° (Bulgarian Wikipedia). From Aleko hut the walk takes under two hours, and the last section crosses a small boulder field (Bulguides).

The view faces north. The sunrise lies off to the right of it, and the sunsets further west, off to the left. Kamen Del is hard to reach at dawn without a car or a night at a hut. The 66 bus does not reach Aleko until well after sunrise: on the timetable checked, the first bus left the Zoo at 08:30 on weekdays and 08:00 on weekends and holidays (Sofia Traffic). It is also hard to leave after dusk, since the last 66 left Aleko at 18:00. What can work by bus is the late-afternoon light in the shortest days of the year, with the city below in low, side-on light. Sunset in December is just before 17:00, so leave the summit by about 15:30 and the last part of the walk back to Aleko will be in dusk. Check the winter timetable first, because the park expects the last buses to leave earlier from November. Expect snow and ice on this route in winter.

Cherni Vrah at sunrise#

From the summit of Cherni Vrah, the highest point of Vitosha, the view takes in the Sofia plain, Stara Planina and Rila. There is a weather station on top, built in 1935, with a small tea room and a mountain rescue post (Bulgarian Wikipedia). The station gives shelter in bad weather but has no tourist accommodation (Wikipedia). A sunrise here starts at Aleko hut, which is run by the Bulgarian Tourist Union and Moten tourist club. It has 100 beds, its contact numbers are on the union's page, and it lists Cherni Vrah as 1 hr 30 min away (BTS). On a June morning, that means setting off by about 04:15, before first light.

Treat this as a mountain outing, not a city viewpoint. Cherni Vrah has an average annual temperature of 0.3 °C and an average wind speed of 9.3 m/s, making it the second windiest peak in Bulgaria (Wikipedia). Strong winds, blizzards and thick fog are possible in any month (Bulguides).

Last buses and car access#

These are the last departures on the Sofia Traffic timetable as checked on 27 October 2026 (Sofia Traffic):

Treat these times as a snapshot, not a fixed schedule. The park's transport page gives a seasonal rule: the last bus leaves the mountain at 20:00 from April to October and at 17:45 from November to March (park access page). The October timetable was already earlier than that 20:00, and the winter timetable is likely to be earlier again, so check the departures for your date on sofiatraffic.bg before you go.

Since February 2025, bus 63 has run to Golden Bridges all year, and bus 66 has been extended to a turning circle at Aleko hut (Council decision 52/2025). On the timetable checked, the 63 ran to Golden Bridges between morning and early evening, while the early and late runs turned at ul. Byalata cheshma. In short, Balkonacheto is the only viewpoint here within a short walk of a bus that kept running late into the evening.

By car or taxi, there are no access restrictions from 1 April to 30 November. From 1 December to 31 March, private cars may not enter the roads from Boyana to Ofeliite and from Dragalevtsi to Aleko between 11:00 and 16:00 on weekends and holidays. Taxis, public transport, vehicles carrying disabled people and hotel or hut guests with a booking are exempt. Driving up after 16:00 for a winter sunset is therefore allowed, unless the road has been closed. At any time of year, as a last resort, the police can temporarily close the roads from Boyana to Golden Bridges, from Ofeliite to the BNR hut turn-off and the last stretch to Aleko, for safety, bad weather, events or full car parks. In heavy snow or ice they can also close traffic and ban stopping and parking from 22:00 to 06:00 (Sofia Municipality order, 9 March 2026).

Coming down in the dark#

The park's safety advice applies directly to the walk down. Plan the day's walking to fit the daylight. Carry a torch with spare batteries and a warm spare layer. Do not walk alone, and tell someone your route. In fog, follow the waymarks, and if you lose your bearings, go down by a safe way into the forest. For accidents, the park lists the Mountain Rescue Service on 02 963 2000 (park advice). In practice, only walk down in the dark on a path you climbed in daylight the same day. The marked ridge path from Knyazhevo is steep, so take it slowly by torchlight. On a short winter day, a taxi on the Kopitoto road is a sensible alternative.

What does not work#

• The lifts. The Simeonovo gondola last ran in autumn 2023 and was declared beyond repair in May 2024. Its owner submitted a reconstruction project in July 2025, but no reopening has been reported (Bulgarian Wikipedia). The park lists the Dragalevtsi chairlift as not operating (park access page).
• A city observation deck. The Sky Fort tower, 202 m high, includes a panoramic deck in its design and is due for completion only in late 2026. Public access has not been announced (Wikipedia).
• Lozen Monastery of St Spas. Its courtyard, on a natural terrace in the Lozen mountain, has a panoramic view of the Sofia plain. Seen from the monastery, the city lies to the north-west, close to where the sun sets in midsummer. Bulgarian Wikipedia gives its opening hours as 09:00 to 17:30, without a source. If those hours are right, they rule out sunrise and every sunset outside roughly November to January (Bulgarian Wikipedia).
