Uluru and Kata Tjuta: choose the walk before the desert chooses the heat
Plan Uluru base walks and Kata Tjuta’s Valley of the Winds around heat closures, water, facilities and cultural notices.
Sources checked — 5 September 2026
Uluru and Kata Tjuta are separate walks inside one protected park. The official visitor guide lists base-walk options at Uluru and the Valley of the Winds and Walpa Gorge options at Kata Tjuta. The same guide identifies limited facilities on remote walks, so plan water and return time before leaving the visitor centre (official visitor guide).
Put heat and closures first
Valley of the Winds has heat-related start and closure guidance that must be checked for the date. The Parks Australia weather fact sheet is the useful source for desert heat, wind, flies and changing conditions; do not transfer a cool dawn temperature to the whole walk (desert weather fact sheet). Carry the water amount the park currently requires, protect yourself from sun and turn back before heat or wind removes the safety margin.
The park may close or alter access for cultural events, funerals, weather, heat or emergency operations. Parks Australia’s current news and alerts take priority over an older itinerary; an August 2026 closure notice is a reminder that a named walk can change with little connection to a visitor’s booking (Parks Australia news). Do not enter a closed walk or climb Uluru. Respect Anangu cultural guidance and stay on the designated route.
Distances between Uluru, Kata Tjuta and services are substantial. Fill water, check toilets and facilities on the current guide, and allow a road margin before sunset. If the Valley of the Winds is closed, use an open lower-risk walk rather than driving to an unofficial viewpoint or assuming a familiar itinerary is still valid.
