Vintgar Gorge from Bled: tickets, shuttle and the return trail

Vintgar is a 1.6 km gorge cut by the Radovna River between the vertical walls of the Hom and Boršt hills, a short hop from Lake Bled. Wooden galleries and bridges pinned to the rock carry you just above the river's pools and rapids to Šum, a 13 m waterfall and one of Slovenia's few river waterfalls (Bled Tourist Board). It is an easy and memorable walk, and popular enough that entry now works on timed passes and a shuttle from a central car park.

Allow at least three hours. The gorge path is one-way, so you return on a separate 4.1 km trail through the villages of Gorje.

What you see in the gorge#

The gorge has been open to visitors since 1893. Two years earlier, the photographer Benedikt Lergetporer and Jakob Žumer, mayor of Gorje, made the first passage through it when the river was unusually low; more than 500 m of bridges and galleries followed (Bled Tourist Board). The local Tourist Association Gorje still runs it and spends more than 10,000 hours each year on safety work along the route (gorge route).

The walk from the visitor centre to Šum takes about 45 minutes. The path crosses the river again and again on bridges anchored to the rock, sometimes squeezed between the cliff and the water. Along the way, the single stone arch of the Bohinj railway bridge, built in 1905, spans the gorge 33.5 m above the path. At the end the river drops over Šum waterfall and the gorge opens out. Eight audio points along the way tell the gorge's story through QR codes.

The operator rates the gorge route as easy, and a helmet is compulsory from the visitor centre to the exit below Šum. Staff hand it out with a fresh liner and collect it at the end.

The return trail#

You cannot walk back through the gorge; going against the one-way flow can earn a €50 penalty (pricelist). Instead, the King of Triglav Trail climbs out of the valley for 4.1 km, about two hours with stops, back to the visitor centre or shuttle terminal. It passes St Catherine's Church, with one of the finest views over Bled, then follows meadows, pastures and village lanes with views of the Julian Alps. Together the gorge and return trail make 5.7 km. The operator's own estimate is at least three hours, plus the shuttle ride and time to get to the car park.

When to go#

The gorge is open from spring to late autumn and closes in winter for safety and maintenance (FAQ). Entrance hours change through the season (opening hours):

These are entry times; you can finish the walk after the last entry. April and May, and late September to November, are the quietest months. In summer, the busiest period is 10:00 to 13:00, so book a slot at opening time or in the late afternoon.

Rain does not close Vintgar, but the boardwalks and steps become slippery, so wear shoes with good grip and a waterproof layer rather than carrying an umbrella, which blocks narrow sections. The gorge closes only in extreme weather, and that is the only case in which the pass is refunded or rebooked.

Passes and prices#

Everyone needs a Vintgar Gorge All-in-One Pass for a set date and entry time. It costs €15 for adults, students and seniors, €5 for children up to 15, and €3 for a dog (pricelist). The price covers entry to the gorge, the return trail with its audio guide, and "Green Access": parking at the official car park and the electric shuttle there and back. Guided tours cost €25 for adults and €15 for children.

Buy online to secure your slot. Without an online pass, the only place to buy one is the Central VINTGAR LIP Parking (P1), where you take the next free slot; there are no sales at the visitor centre. If you miss your time, you wait for the next available slot (visit plan).

Getting there#

By car. Private cars cannot reach the visitor centre. Drive to Central Parking VINTGAR LIP (P1), the only official car park, which has toilets, refreshments, a ticket desk and shaded waiting areas. Arrive at least 40 minutes before your slot. Parking is limited to four hours, which covers the shuttle, the gorge and the return trail if you keep moving, and overnight stays in cars and motorhomes are not allowed (how to reach us).

By shuttle. Electric shuttles run from P1 to the visitor centre about every seven minutes, a ride of around 20 minutes. Pass holders staying in Bled can board at Bled Central Bus Station, beside the Bled Rose Hotel; buses leave every 15 minutes and you change at P1. Return services run until two hours after the gorge closes (shuttle).

On foot or by bike. Central Bled is about 4 km, a 50-minute walk, from the gorge. Bicycles and motorcycles can park free near the visitor centre, but bikes are not allowed on the gorge path.

By train. Podhom, on the Jesenice to Nova Gorica line, is the closest station to the visitor centre. Train times are not linked to your entry slot, so build in a margin.

Who it suits, and the rules#

The route is not accessible for wheelchairs or pushchairs because of narrow paths, stairs and uneven ground, and the operator does not recommend it for children under three. Dogs need their own pass, must stay on a lead and wear a muzzle on the shuttle; mornings and late afternoons are calmer for them.

Vintgar lies inside Triglav National Park and a Natura 2000 site. Stay on the path, do not climb railings or bridges, swim, throw stones or pick plants, and do not overtake on the narrow galleries (responsible visit). Flying a drone needs the national park's prior consent (park code of conduct).
