Journey Behind the Falls: choose a wet, enclosed view of Horseshoe Falls

Journey Behind the Falls is a close, wet view of Ontario’s Horseshoe Falls. Niagara Parks’ attraction page says visitors descend 125 feet by elevator, pass through 130-year-old bedrock tunnels and reach viewing portals and observation decks. The same page gives an approximate duration of 60 minutes, describes the experience as self-guided and partially accessible, and says it operates year-round. It is a different choice from a broad rim panorama or a boat ride.

Check the parts of the route you can use#

The official attraction information says the elevator reaches a wide accessible tunnel, the portals and the upper observation deck, while stairs lead to the lower observation deck. That lower deck is the closest, wettest part of the route and may have seasonal access changes. Ask Niagara Parks about the current deck status if the lowest viewpoint matters to someone with limited mobility.

The tunnels are part of the attraction, not a shortcut between viewpoints. According to the official FAQ, they are about 8 feet wide and 7 feet high. Do not bring a stroller. Bags larger than 56 × 36 × 23 cm are not allowed, and other bags can be inspected. Wear shoes that tolerate water and protect phones and medication from spray.

Online timed tickets let you choose a one-hour window to join the queue; Niagara Parks also offers an Anytime Ticket. The 60-minute attraction estimate does not include every queue, elevator-loading or transfer delay, so leave room before a fixed meal, train or border crossing. Niagara Parks’ transport page lists Falls Parking Lot A as the closest parking lot; check current availability and rates on the day.

The attraction is currently scheduled to remain open during redevelopment. In its 2026 redevelopment notice, Niagara Parks describes a restored historic tunnel and covered heated viewing platform planned for spring 2027, followed by an upgraded Rainbow Platform planned for spring 2028. Construction can alter access or the visitor flow, so reread the current attraction page before treating a visit as a precise photography stop.

Choose this ticket for the sound, vibration, portals and spray of a close viewpoint. Choose a rim viewpoint if the group needs a wide context, and choose another attraction if enclosed tunnels or stairs make this route unsuitable. A poncho protects clothing from much of the spray but does not make electronics waterproof.
