The Krushuna Waterfalls (Krushunski vodopadi) are not one waterfall but a staircase of them: a long cascade of tufa terraces, each step its own small fall, on the northern slope of the Devetashko plateau about 1 km south of the village of Krushuna in Letnitsa municipality (Bulgarian Wikipedia). It is often called the largest cascade of its kind in Bulgaria (ShowCaves; Vagabond). The short version: it is a paid municipal park (€2.56 for adults), the walk is short enough for families, the flow is best in spring and after rain, and you need a car or taxi to get there.
How the cascade builds itself
The river at Krushuna does not cut down through hard rock the way a mountain waterfall does. It builds its own steps. The Devetashko plateau is limestone karst, and the water rises from a cave at the head of the cascade carrying dissolved limestone (ShowCaves). Underground, water charged with carbon dioxide can hold far more calcium carbonate than it can in open air. When it emerges, it loses carbon dioxide to the atmosphere, its pH rises, and calcite comes out of solution. The extra contact between air and water at falls may speed this up. Life on the wet rock matters too. Photosynthesis can push the water further towards precipitation, and in flume experiments calcite did not precipitate at all without a microbial film, even from supersaturated water (Tufa).
The result is a porous, plant-studded rock that grows outward at every lip where the water speeds up. Over time the lips grow into rims and barriers, and the barriers hold back pools: the "rimstone pools" behind each small fall at Krushuna (ShowCaves). That is why the falls look draped and rounded rather than sharp, and why the water collects in a chain of blue-green basins. Bulgarian sources call the rock both bigor (tufa) and travertine. In stricter geological usage, travertine is the denser deposit of geothermally heated springs and tufa the deposit of cool water (Tufa).
The living part of this system is easy to damage. The terraces are soft and the moss on them is part of how they grow, so stay on the paths and bridges and keep off the rims.
The walk
The eco-trail starts about half a kilometre south of the village, climbs upstream beside the cascade and crosses it on several footbridges (Bulgarian Wikipedia). From the car park at the end of the road it is about 400 m, or 10 minutes, to the falls (ShowCaves). The park has two marked routes, red and blue. The red route takes about 20-30 minutes; walking the whole eco-trail takes 1.5-2 hours (pateka.im). No official length or step count is published, so treat these as typical times rather than measurements.
At the top is Praskaloto, "the sprinkler", the first and highest fall of the series and the only one with its own name (Vagabond). Its height is given as 15 m in most sources (Bulgarian Wikipedia; ShowCaves; Vagabond) and about 20 m in others (pateka.im). Sources name the cave that feeds the cascade differently: Krushuna Cave in Bulgarian Wikipedia and ShowCaves, Maarata in Vagabond. The pateka.im guide places a separate water cave, Vodopada, beside Maarata as the river's source and says it can only be entered with special equipment and a guide (pateka.im). None of these caves is part of an ordinary visit.
The path runs below steep slopes. In November 2015 about 200 cubic metres of earth and rock fell onto a footbridge on the eco-trail and killed two visitors. The courts later held the municipality liable because the consequences could have been prevented (dir.bg). Obey any closed sections and do not linger under loose banks after heavy rain.
Fee, parking and opening
The park is run by Letnitsa municipality as Park "Maarata", and its prices are set in the municipal fee ordinance (Letnitsa ordinance):
| Ticket | Price per day |
|---|---|
| Adults | €2.56 |
| Pupils and students | €1.53 |
| Children under 7 | Free |
| Residents of Letnitsa municipality, with ID | Free |
| Visitors with a disability, with ID and a TELK certificate | Free |
| Car parking | €1.53 per car |
The ordinance does not give opening hours. A visitor guide reported the ticket office open 08:00-20:00 in 2023 (pateka.im); confirm before an early or late visit. The municipality lists a tourist information centre in Krushuna, open daily 10:00-18:00, on +359 886 331 277 (Letnitsa municipality), but that page dates from 2014.
The falls draw a large crowd for a village site: about 80,000 visitors in 2024, most of them from Romania, according to Letnitsa's mayor (BTA). Arrive early on summer weekends if you want the bridges to yourself.
When the flow is best
The cascade is fullest in spring and after rain (pateka.im). In drier spells expect less water over the terraces; the pools and the rock forms themselves are still the point of the visit. Right after a downpour, the rockfall history above is a reason to wait for the slopes to settle.
Protected status
The karst formations around the river's source are a natural landmark, "Marata", declared by Order 418 of 14 November 1995 and covering 57.018 decares (about 5.7 ha) of Krushuna's land, as updated by Order RD-471 of 28 May 2013 (State Gazette 56/2013). The order spells the name "Marata"; the municipality uses "Maarata". The landmark also lies wholly or partly within the Natura 2000 bird site BG0002102, Devetashko plato, whose register entry lists it among the overlapping protected areas (register, BG0002102). Krushuna is also among the listed locations of the habitats site of the same name, BG0000615 (register, BG0000615). Among the habitats the BG0000615 order aims to improve is 7220*, "petrifying springs with tufa formation", a priority habitat in EU law (register, BG0000615).
Getting there
Measured with OpenStreetMap routing, the falls are about 35 km by road from Lovech, 50 km from Pleven, 78 km from Veliko Tarnovo and 190 km from Sofia (OpenStreetMap). Letnitsa, the municipal centre, is about 8 km to the north (Bulgarian Wikipedia). Parking is at the end of the road beside a spa complex (ShowCaves).
By public transport it is hard. A village bus between Lovech and Letnitsa through Krushuna appeared in Lovech municipality's 2020 schedule with two runs on weekdays and one at weekends (Lovech municipality), and no current timetable is published online. Ask at Lovech bus station, or plan on a car or a taxi from Lovech or Letnitsa.
Nearby
Devetashka Cave. The vast daylight cave above the Osam lies about 15 km west (Bulgarian Wikipedia) and is the usual pairing with Krushuna. On 23 May 2026 Lovech municipality closed the bridge before Devetaki and the cave, with a detour through Yoglav and Tepava (notice). Its notice of 23 October 2026 lists the cave with winter hours of 09:00-16:00 daily from 26 October (winter hours), but no separate reopening notice has been posted, so ring ahead. For the cave itself, its bats and its seasonal gallery closures, see the Lovech, Troyan and Pleven guide.
The Hesychast rock monastery. Man-made niches in the rocks around the falls are the trace of medieval monks who practised Hesychasm, the contemplative prayer tradition of the Orthodox church (Vagabond). The municipality describes the ruins of a rock monastery with a rock church whose rare triangular entrance symbolises the Trinity, and traces of the monks' cells (Letnitsa municipality).
Roman fortresses. The remains of two Roman forts, Kaleto and Daran-baran, stand on the hills above the village, close to the line of a Roman road (Letnitsa municipality).
For bigger waterfalls in the high Balkan range, see the Central Balkan waterfalls guide.
Prices, the protected-area records and the Devetashka notices were checked against municipal and register sources on 27 October 2026. This is a source check, not a site visit.
