Peneda-Gerês camping: check the authorised site first

In Peneda-Gerês, “I found a quiet place” does not answer “may I sleep here?” The ICNF activity conditions for the park mark camping or caravanning outside designated places, and overnight stays outside authorised conditions, as prohibited. The same document says permitted nature-tourism activities can be subject to temporary restrictions and recommends contacting the park at [email protected] before setting out. Choose the authorised overnight place first, then build the walk around it.

Separate a campsite from a wild pitch#

The park’s protected-area activity table is a legal and planning reference, not a booking confirmation. It says activities are conditioned by the park’s management plan and that the table does not replace reading that plan. Contact the park with the date, group size, equipment and intended area. A campsite reservation may establish your place to sleep while a nearby trail or road remains temporarily restricted.

Do not pitch beside a waterfall, on a riverbank or in a car park because it looks empty. Use the place the current operator or park authority identifies, keep vehicles within permitted areas and leave enough room for residents, emergency access and livestock. The ICNF park page describes a large, inhabited protected landscape spanning 22 parishes, so a trail crosses working land as well as scenery.

Cook with the park’s fire boundary in mind#

The ICNF code of conduct advises visitors to carry water, provisions, a rubbish bag, suitable clothing, a map and local authority contacts. It says to follow marked trails, use camping stoves in picnic-park spaces and camp only at authorised places. Treat those instructions as the minimum preparation: a stove is not permission to cook on a path, beside dry grass or at an unauthorised pitch.

Carry every wrapper, food scrap and fuel container to the disposal point the campsite provides. Do not leave a fire unattended. If the wind, dryness or a local notice makes cooking unsafe, use food that needs no heat and report a fire or smoke through the current emergency channel.

Check the route again on the day#

ICNF’s activity page explains that tourism activities in protected areas are regulated by each area’s management plan and provides park-specific condition tables. Contact [email protected] before the visit and keep the reply with your booking. If the answer is delayed or a closure is posted, postpone the overnight or choose a confirmed campsite and route rather than treating silence as permission.
