Recruit with operational detail#

Publish the exact meeting point, start and finish, walking surface, supplied tools, water requirement, age limits and what happens if weather turns poor. Children should remain with a responsible adult and work only on ordinary, clearly visible litter.

Close the operation, not just the event#

Before volunteers leave, sweep the staging point for torn bags, loose caps and borrowed equipment. The coordinator should send the collector a final bag count and photograph, then retain the contact until pickup is confirmed. If collection is delayed, do not shift bags to an unapproved public bin or leave them where wind and animals can reopen them. Escalate through the agreed municipal or site-manager route.

Within a day, share a short factual note: section covered, volunteer hours, bag and bulky-item counts, exclusions, and collection status. Avoid converting volume into an unsupported weight estimate. A useful debrief also records what ran out, which boundary was unclear and whether the next action should be another cleanup, a better bin location, enforcement or investigation of a recurring source.
